If you’re looking for a liposuction specialist in Hawaii you can trust for a gorgeous, natural result, look no further. S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS performed the first liposuction in Hawaii in 1983 and has performed more than 7,000 liposuctions since then at his Honolulu plastic surgery practice.
Liposuction is an extremely popular cosmetic procedure that involves suctioning fat deposits in specific areas of the body. While it can provide results that suggest it is a weight loss surgery, it is actually a body contouring procedure that is designed to sculpt a patient into an aesthetically pleasing figure.
I am an active 27 year old female who has never been “fat” but I have never loved my figure. I had the hardest time shedding the excess fatty areas in my hips and thighs which was genetic. I came to Dr. Schlesinger for classic liposuction and I honestly couldn’t have been happier with the results. He knew exactly what I needed, and with his extensive knowledge on the procedure I knew I could trust him. Two weeks post op I can look in the mirror and see smaller curves I never could have achieved with just diet and exercise. My new figure is amazing and I highly recommend him to anyone looking to sculpt their body into the best possible shape it can be!—Actual patient on RealSelf. Read more RealSelf patient reviews »
Benefits of Liposuction
The goal of liposuction is to sculpt, tone and add definition to certain parts of the body. Liposuction is used to remove the layer of fat beneath the superficial layer and reduces the number of fat cells in a specified area. Liposuction is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States and results in an improved body contour and very little scarring.

S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS’s preferred liposuction technique involves a tumescent injection to decrease patient discomfort and bleeding, followed by skillful, manual suctioning of fat cells. According to a study performed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 90 percent of surgeons perform traditional liposuction as opposed to the 10 percent that use various laser procedures.
S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS prefers the traditional liposuction technique because laser liposuction techniques (SmartLipo, SlimLipo, etc.) provide no additional benefit to the patient and in many cases lead to bumpiness in the treated area. Additionally, some patient’s needs simply cannot be met by laser liposuction techniques.

The Surgery
During the liposuction procedure, small inconspicuous incisions are made. First, a sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube is inserted through the small incisions to loosen excess fat. Finally, the dislodged fat is suctioned out of the body.
Once your procedure is completed, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover the treated area. These are used to help control swelling and compress the skin to your new shape. Recovery times vary based on the number and location of areas involved in the procedures. Typically, a return to normal activities occurs in five to ten days.
It may take several weeks for the swelling to fully dissipate. As it does, you will see your new contours develop. As long as a healthy weight and lifestyle is maintained, the results of liposuction should remain.
Dr. Schlesinger has been doing ultrasound after liposuction for over 20 years with great results.
Therapeutic ultrasound therapy (as opposed to ultrasound imaging) is the kind physical therapists use to get rid of sore muscles. Ultrasound therapy converts sound energy into heat, which brings blood supply to treated areas to help get rid of swelling and bruising. By using ultrasound after liposuction, the typical liposuction recovery time is only about one month compared to six months when ultrasound is not used. Ultrasound has a second benefit in that there are some free fat cells that have been knocked off their mooring, and the ultrasound helps sift them as a sifter would do for flour in your kitchen, therefore leveling out the cells and allowing a quicker, smoother result. Ultrasound therapy should be done for a minimum of four sessions and for certain difficult areas like the back and neck, you need eight sessions to get the optimum results.
