Labiaplasty is the surgical procedure designed to remove unwanted, enlarged portions of the Labia Minora (internal labia) that can cause physical and emotional discomfort. The procedure is growing in popularity as part of a Mommy Makeover that can also include breast lifts, breast augmentations, liposuction, and tummy tucks. The Labia Majora (outer labia) can also be augmented with fat grafting to either enlarge or reduce the size of the Labia Majora. Overall, a labiaplasty can cosmetically rejuvenate the female external genitalia, including the labia majora, labia minora and the clitoral hood.

Labiaplasty Benefits
After the procedure, labiaplasty patients will find they have no discomfort when wearing tight clothing and experience increased self-confidence and self-esteem. Labiaplasty is also proven to eliminate discomfort many women experience during physical activity or intercourse because of elongated labia. Last but not least, a labiaplasty will enhance the appearance of the female vagina, giving patients a more youthful appearance in the area.
About Labiaplasty
There are two surgical techniques used to complete a labiaplasty. The first is Edge Trimming, which is the process of removing the free edge of each labia with the purpose of reducing the portion present outside of the Labia Majora. The second surgical technique is Wedge Resection, which involves the removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together.
It is S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS’s opinion that Wedge Resection is the most valuable technique and has given his patients a more aesthetically pleasing appearance to their vaginas. Wedge Resection patients also benefit from improved function as this technique is the only that allows for the tightening of the opening to the vagina. The Wedge Resection also gives surgeons the flexibility to provide results with minimal scarring.
Another aspect of a labiaplasty is the Clitoral Hood Reduction, which is a technically difficult procedure and can have negative, painful consequences if not done correctly. S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS uses a technique that decreases the chance of scarring around the clitoris by placing the incision a safe distance from the clitoral hood.
